As part of the Embassy of India to China, Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (formerly Indian Cultural Centre) promotes Indian art, music and culture among our Chinese friends. Through classes, activities, seminars and exhibitions, Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) performs the role of a cultural bridge between India and China, connecting the people of both countries with the cultural traditions of each other. Indian Cultural Centre, Beijing took its new avatar as Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre at a naming ceremony held on 14 August 2018 at Embassy Auditorium with Shri Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, President, Indian Council for Cultural Relations as the Chief Guest at the ceremony.
SVCC conducts classes of Indian classical Dance, Music and Yoga on a regular basis by experienced teachers appointed by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and also drawing upon local talents and ICCR scholars.
SVCC takes the lead role in promoting Yoga in China. Over the years, a large number of Chinese Yoga lovers have participated in our Yoga events to mark the International Day of Yoga celebrations at different places throughout China. Some of the major Yoga events include First International Day of Yoga event at SCO Headquarters, Yoga at Longfu Temple (a Buddhist Temple in nearby province of Hebei), Yoga at the Great Wall, Yoga at the Temple of Heaven, Yoga at the Wuhan Yellow Crane Tower etc. Apart from IDY celebrations Special Yoga Workshops and classes are held at Embassy through out the year in collaboration with local Yoga institutes. Embassy Yoga teachers are closely involved in conducting these events. From time to time thematic yoga workshops are also organized by the Culture Centre.
SVCC also organizes Hindi Pakhwada event every year during Hindi Diwas and celebrates Vishwa Hindi Diwas to promote study of Hindi language. Various activities like Essay writing, Poetry recitation, Speech competition etc are held in collaboration with Universities and institutes to engage the Chinese youth in knowing the Hindi language. Indian Council of Cultural Relations also administers Chairs in different Universities of China for imparting Hindi laguage lessons. During the Visit of External Affairs Minister Smt Sushma Swaraj to China in April 2018, a major Hindi Conference was organized in Beijing. The Conference was well attended by teachers and students from different Universities of China where Hindi language is taught.
The Centre also organizes various events including concerts, art exhibitions, film screenings, seminars and workshops on a regular basis. Facilities include a state of the art Auditorium which can seat approximately 180 people. Every month SVCC organizes screening of an Indian movie. In recent years, the Chinese audience has hugely appreciated Indian movies. The Movie of the Month series has been successful in bringing together movie enthusiasts among Chinese public to appreciate different genres of Indian cinema. Apart from events at Embassy, SVCC also collaborates with Ministry of Culture and major cultural bodies in China such as NCPA, CPAFFC, CCOM, Soong Ching Ling Foundation to organize various events through out the year.
